This presentation was created for the Diwali-2004 show (DHOOM) by the University of Kansas Cultural India Club. Few places like this exist it seems. Where you can actually be in no-kidding Alpine wilderness and yet see the city lights below. Making the higher mountain lake in the snow with time available is an impossibility. Temps had plummeted and the night sky is alive with a crisp clarity that keeps us awestruck. We are reluctant to go down as we take it in but it grows late, 930pm to be exact, and Crocket awaits below. We get underway following my 2003 GPS track in heavy snow that hides the trail. This route is longer but avoids the bushwhack that vexed us on our ascent. Camp provides some entertainment as he adapts to the steep descent on deep snow…trust those steel cleats on the MSR Denalis and the trekking poles or risk death! (ok I made up that last part). My nighttime navigation with the Garmin GPS60x leads us true over the ridge and back to base camp though Campfiretalk seemed to have his doubts. Crocket did a great job with the fire that greets the return. Some farting ensues and I for once ain’t a player in the game. I’m glad Allie and I didn’t have to bunk with those guys. Morning breaks with llamas outside the tent. I plan some camp fun with the .22 bolt gun and we love the sunny morning.
